Skywalker X-5 Flight Test Video
Mar 12th, 2013 at 7:46pm

The flight goes along well until the canopy blows off. The camera was on the canopy. The canopy went through the prop. The camera and canopy were recovered as we have the video to show you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sR9NcpydmFA

The video ended abruptly when the canopy blew off and went through the prop.

The plane was landed safely.

Post Mortem:

The plane has a hole in the nose for an on board video for FPV. As the speed built up the pressure under the canopy rose until the yield point of the magnet set holding the hatch. The fix is another set of magnets and a vent hole in the aft end of the canopy to relieve pressure build up.

The repairs to the canopy will take some foam scraps and sanding.

Later I will post the after pictures of the canopy.

The pilot was focused on landing the plane. Old safety adage "Fly the plane first". Applies to full size as well as models.

On the test flight a recording was made of the flight path.  It is in KML format suitable for viewing in Google Earth.

The file is attached.

Download the file and change the extension to kml from ZIP.  Then if you have Google Earth installed, find the file and double click on it.  The yellow is manual flight, the purple/pink is stabilized flight, the red is autonomous flight.
