electric sundowner
Jul 18th, 2013 at 6:30pm

Before he left this week on his current assignment Craig gave me his hangar nine sundowner which he had banged up a bit last summer.  Don't know why he didn't repair it and continue flying it as there is very little damage to the airframe.

just a couple of cracks on a couple of internal formers and some rash on the cowl.  with the spinner on most of the cowl damage is hidden.

1 and 2.  my e-motor installation a 42-60 500.  Not pulling as many amps as I'd like as there is not enough clearance for my usual 15/8 on that motor.  prop shown is a 14/8.

3. buttoned up, you hardly see the cowl damage behind the spinner

4. this motor and speed controller will get a lot of cooling from the holes where the glow muffler/glow plug/needle valve once resided.

I will make all low passes from right to left.  lol

When the conectors weld together than that is the perfect setup. 250 watts per pound is the starting point! Nothing less.

well my sundowner is sitting again on the workbench with a big wide smile!  two flights today, the maiden in very windy conditions and that plane is a thoroughbred.  very smooth and precise.

took off almost on it's own, same for landing.

as expected I'm not totally happy with the power.  Great for a sport airplane, but a bit laid back for a racer.  we will address that with another prop next time out.

battery and motor just barely warm after a flight, so nothing being stressed which leaves
some room for a bit of stressing.  lol

Does it seem a bit faster to you Al watching it on the video than when you were flying it? It is going at a pretty decent clip and I had a challenge following you!
