Title: Field Starting Stands - Various Plans
Post by small_rc on Mar 17th, 2024 at 2:34pm
I have noticed that some of the flying stands at the field are in need of a bit of repair. To help any one who might wish to contribute, google found some plans for me.  The files attached are variations on some standard versions.

The one with angled side legs and similarly sloped wing stops, overcomes an issue found with the tables tipping forward with large planes or lots of thrust.

If you decide to build one or 2 choose the version you like best.  Most people use Pressure Treated Wood.  If using wheels, watch for lawn mowers on garbage day in your neighbourhood and select the one with the largest wheels to be the donor.

The Run-Up-Stand-Normal seems to be very popular and very close to the AMA approved version.

The first one is a variation of the Run Up Stand-Normal to correct the tendency for it to tip forward with larger planes or heavy weights on the side tables.

You may wish to make a variation which is smaller or larger to accomodate the size of planes you have.  The things you might change are the distance between the uprights that act as wing stops, the angle of the legs to resist tipping and the overall height of the table.

Side tables can optionally be at the same height as the table or set lower as some plans show.

In answer to your question, probably 2, but the 2nd would be for my flying field at my cottage.  It very much depends on the time available. Any I make will be scaled for smaller planes such as the 049 and 020 size that I prefer to fly.

So the height will be a bit higher.  The width between the uprights will be smaller to accomodate the smaller wingspan.  There will be a small shelf for the smaller flight boxes we use.  There may be a restraint for the tail feathers rather than the tall posts in the front to stop the plane from coming forward.

Many of our small planes have no landing gear.  The nose has to be over the front of the stand to make starting practical.

I have been watching for dead lawn mowers on trash day for wheels to use on the starting stands.  Wheels make it a lot easier to move the starting stands.

Last fall I repaired a starting stand at the field by taking usable boards from a broken one.  Probably have to do that again this year.  Might have to bring some new 5/4x4 or 5/4x6 PT boards to enable more to be repaired.

I have found a source of free or nearly so, steel roofing.  A few pieces are missing from the shelter(s).  They will be installed as time permits.  I need to bring the ladder to do that.

If anyone else besides myself and Newfie Bullet is planning to build 1 or 2 starting stands, I have a trailer to take the stand(s) to the field for you.
