Good day everyone.  :)
It has been a long time since I posted anything on my good old flying club site.
Not much was happening due to El Corona, COVID-19. So, I decided to start a new project but first I had to build it a hangar.  ;) Just a small 24’x24’ with 10’ ceiling to ensure the tail would fit in.  :)
I mentioned to my lovely wife my new airplane project and she was all in and happy for me.  :o Problem was the questions I got when building material started to show up in the driveway.  :-? So, no longer a hangar but a garage for the car, camper trailer and RC cargo trailer.  :(
So, here below picture is the start of a new toy. For the moment, I will call this the El Second Wave 21 (ESW21).  :-?  See if you can tell what it will be. Just a small hint, Black Friday.  :-X

I was going to put in two 90mm fans but turns out two 70mm units will do the job as seen on the E-FLITE SU-30. so, placed to order and now awaiting for the parts. them back order stuff. :'( :'( :'( well, good thing I have salted caramel Crown Royal to pass the time :P

slow progress but with COVID-19, who needs to rush anything.
so, in order to ensure trust would be strait out I had to replace F9 with F9. as you can see, with F9 the trust pipe would have pointing up. I will be adding two tail pipe make of foam with the pipe reducing from 70mm at the fan to 60mm at the end of the tail pipe.
I will ensure the intake is somewhat larger by squaring off the opening.

my wife came down the work shop this morning to check on the progress.
first thing she said to me was nice looking boat.  :-? I had to remind her I am building a plane.  ;)

Got some small progress done on the bird.
front end is shaping up a little. nose cone will be one of the last step.
hatch will be held in place with two small magnet (not the ones I just got).
the plan calls for a #10 SIG canopy, I have a #10 Great Plane one, should do the job just fine.
note the air intakes. Had to fill in behind the cockpit as the former was laser cut to 85mm. it will be squared off as detailed by the lines (if they can be seen). The opening area will be big enough to accommodate twin 70mm EDF.
Not closing the top of the fuse until the retracts are installed. found what seemed to be appropriate in Horizon Hobby. Took another look at them this morning and boom, gone, nothing that I could use.
had in mind the 25-40 size or 60-120 size with oleo.
accepting any recommendation on what retracts I could use.
every thing gets on the scale. my wife ask where her scale was and I replied, with a smile, crushed by a plane honey. slept on the sofa that night. current weight is 539 grams, 1.188 Lbs for the baby boomers.

Well, it has been a while since I updated the progress. Don’t blame me, it is my boss fault, he keeps giving me work to do. I told him to slow down so I can work on my plane........hope I still get paid next week.  :-/

More modification to the build from the original plan.  :o
Decided to make one big hatch to open up the inside. I used R1 to make the two middle ribs, remove R2 and use R3 to make the outside walls of the hatch. Introduced some spars to solidify everything and voila. The Fin is not yet glued as I will soon start the rudder. One rudder is done and set in place I will be in a better situation to glue the fin properly.
I am using the aluminum tubing from an old car snow brush. Whit not, recycling is always a good idea.

Still waiting for the wood and EDF units I order by on xmas eve from G.H.
Don’t know what happen but I logged into AliExpress for the first time and ordered tricycle retracts and oleo. Hope that crap will be good stuff.  :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/
As for the battery compartment, it will have to be done during CG process and before the covering is applied.  ;) :) :) :)

Spring is not coming fast enough to melt the snow. so, me wife an I cam up with a plane. it work well but not fast enough for spring to show up.

Good day guys. Long time no post but i was out of comission due to a small slip on the ice. Concossion and Fractured T3 & T4 got me to stay away from the project. Always look on the bright side. While in ER, 4 hot looking nurse took my pants off and my wife was smilling. 🤣

So, my retrack from CCP came in and not too bad either. 2 sets of 169mm long oleo are also looking goodmy two 70mm EDF and motors also came in. Those eflight EDF units don't seem to be the greatest ting since slice bread. They are the same as found in the EFLIGHT SU-30. Time will tell.

So, stay tuned (for newfie bullet, stay off the beer) for more pics and info as i should ease my way back to the shop. That is as lonf as my loving lady does not notice me being gone.

Linette mentioned this morning i started glowing in the dark. Too many X-ray session i think.  ;D ;D ;D :D :D :-[

Progress, slow progress but never the less, progress.

I am using a 0.5" aluminum wing tube.
the problem was how to set the wing and fuselage with a nice tube. well, I figure I would make my own. so it tried with Dollar store cardboard using two layer and scotch tape. that proved to be a bad idea. It was so tight that it broke when I tried to pull it off the tube. So, I decided to try something different. I wrapped the tube with a layer of parchment paper, then I wrapped that with a 1 inch strip of cardboard the I wrapped the entire thing with several layer of half  oz. fiberglass fabric. Mixed up some 30 minutes epoxy and used robbing alcohol  to dilute it to a watery level. Using a foam brush to apply the mixture was the perfect way to keep my fingers clean.
Note the Newfie Bullet guys (Wing Nut) keeping the  wings to the main body. Thank you Craig for the great idea.

Well, just to be sure the wings stays in place I decided to included some craig-wingnuts ;). they will maybee stay in place during flight. :-/
Anyway, here is what she looks like with the main LG on. no Craig, the front one won't be like that. I have to install it properly. :o
EDF installed they big enough. if not, I will be replace them with two Binford 2000, 80mm ones.
CG is approximately 1/2 inch aft of the craig-wingnuts.
currently sitting at 2252g/5.56 LBS. this includes the rudder, ailerons and elevators.
time to buy some more wood to finish it.

Now that the summer vacation are over  :'( and the flying season is slowing down  :(, it was time to progress with the build.  ;)
Got the nose cone done. I used some pink foam from Home Depot to shape it as good as I could. Covered it with 5 coat of water based varnish, wax it 5 time then applied 3 layer of 1oz fiber glass. Not perfect but good enough for a retired sailor. :o ;) :)

Made gear doors for the front wheels. Next is the pain of figuring out how it will all work.
I may take an idea I saw on a beach craft plan I have. Trying to avoid installing a servo.

Once that is done, front wheel steering servo will be installed.

Sitting on the ground, it will look like the real thing…..kind of ::). This should give you an idea of angle of attack. Something else I could say but I fear I would get in trouble, so I am keeping quiet for a change.  :D ;D ;)

this is turning out to be a two years build but what else do I have to to other than work.  ;)
started the covering of the plane.
note the air intake is big enough for installation of 80mm EDF.
at the moment, two 70mm installed with tail pipes and read end completed. if during taxi trials i find the 70mm are not enough then 80mm will be installed.
yep, this means redoing the tail end but easier than crashing and building from scratch again.
I am not too good with fiber glass work but I can always improve.

next is to add more bolts at the back near the tail end cause just the two in the middle seems to be on the lighter side. better be safe than sorry.
set up of rudder servo and covering to the hatch will complete the main body.

Good day everyone.
This is the final entry for this project.
The END for sure.

I took the Arrow to the field for some taxy test early this summer. It was found out the the front wheel jumped off the ground quite easily.
However, on the first attempt to fly the plane it was discovered to be tail heavy. Even if the plane was balance as per the plan (17" from leading edge at the root), flight time was 30 seconds. Back to the shop it went for some minor repairs.

I order and replaced the front landing gear with a single wheel and shorter oleo strut. With this change, the front was not as bouncy as previously discover. Open up the under belly to provide better air to the two EDF. The battery was move forward and CG moved from 17" to 15.25"
it was not easy to figure out the CG and still not quite aware of where it should be. Even using the on-line various program to determine the appropriate CG prove to be a nightmare. Thus, 15.25" from leading edge it is. Told my wife ow nervous I was to try flying it again. She reminded me that no pain no gain and just go have fun. I got the best one I say.

Fun I had on the third time at the field as it went up and away. This time the plane was nose heavy, way too much. Attempts to trim the plane was not that successful. It did fly and we have a video to prove it. Too bad it is of poor quality and I am unable to down load it to post it.

So, after 3 minutes of flight and 33% battery left, it landed in the corn field. Many noticed the change in the EDF sound that went from two to single EDF sound. This was cause by the loss of one fan unit as you can see in the picture. Also you will notice one motor mounting screw missing. I must say I failed to proper identify the motor that had been Loctite and I double check the same EDF unit twice.

So, this plane will be built again but this time I will attempt FOAM cutting technique and use two 80mm EDF for better weight to trust ratio. Many comments were made its slow speed for an Avro Arrow. I just have to install a BINFORD 2000 power system.  ;) :)
