POPOWICH, Richard M. Sr.
June 21, 1937 - February 5, 2020

It is with heartfelt sadness that the family of Richard M. Popowich, Major Retired, announce his peaceful passing on Wednesday, February 5, 2020. Richard was born and raised in Winnipeg, MB and was the eldest son of the late Mike and Mary (Pelechanty) Popowich and was also preceded by his much-loved brother Donald W. Popowich.
Richard is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 59 years, Alva (Brown), his beloved children Richard Popowich Jr., Calgary, AB, Cheryl Popowich-Fowler (Stephen Fowler), Moncton, NB, Donna Popowich (Paul Marsh), Middle Sackville, NS, Ken Popowich (Denise Snow), Bayside, NS and his treasured grandchildren Ryan Krzyski, Halifax, NS, Adam Krzyski, Calgary, AB, Alex Fowler , Toronto, ON and Kyra Fowler, Halifax, NS.
From his earliest memories, Richard always dreamed of aviation. His passion for flight would shape so much of his life and would provide him extensive opportunities to travel the world and pilot the skies.
As a 17-year-old Air Cadet he earned his pilot's license and made this passion the focus of a distinguished 23-year military career in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a navigator and then as a pilot of jet, multi-engine and helicopter aircraft. He proudly served with many Squadrons including the 445 (Wolverine) AW Squadron based in France. Serving with the VP 407 Squadron in 1974, he led the first west coast based maritime transit flight of the North Pole in the 140 Argus bomber he knew so well.
After his military retirement, in 1982, he went on to have a successful career as a financial advisor in his adopted home base of Halifax, NS.
Richard was a golf enthusiast and an active member of Brightwood Golf and Country Club. He was also a lifetime avid reader and in his retirement years found great pleasure in writing short stories to share with his family and friends. We treasure his written memoir he left for us, dedicating his life story to his beloved grandchildren.
Richard achieved his dreams acknowledging and thankful that his life's partner, Alva, would rise to the many challenges his careers presented. He will always be remembered and forever loved by Alva and his family.
As per Richard's wishes, there will be no services. The family will hold a private remembrance. Online condolences can be made at:www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com (Halifax Chapel)

I will miss him

Paul
