Racing format

How the races are structured

The format we are using is taken from RC surface racing. There is a series of qualifiers run and each racer is seeded into a main race according to their best run during the qualifying races.

Each qualifying heat and main race is 2 minutes. When the 2 minutes finishes the race is not over and the clock continues to run. Each racer then completes the lap they are on. This lap counts and their result is a combination of number of laps and time, with the most (or same number of) laps in the least amount of time being the best finish.

For example, the result might be

14/2:05 (14 laps, in 2 minutes and 5 seconds)
14/2:10 (14 laps also, but it took longer, 2 minutes and 10 seconds, thus slower)
13/2:01 (13 laps in 2 minutes and 1 second, less time but fewer laps)

The shortened way you will hear 14/2:05 referred to is running a 14 in 05, because the 2 minutes is assumed.

You do not have to finish to get a placing in the race result. You could be having a good run and crash or burn up a battery before the 2 minutes is up and end up with a 13/1:50.  Your placing will still be a combination of laps and time, and in the above example you would be third, ahead of the 13/2:01. That's why you hear "race finishing" announced by the timing system as the 2 minutes ends. Each racer is announced as finished (eg. "car 1 finished") as the complete the lap they are on and "race over" is announced as the last racer finishes, or when a preset maximum time is reached.

After qualifying rounds are complete for the day each racer is seeded into a main race according to their best single qualifying race of the day. The final results for the day are results of the mains.

As we get more accustomed to the racing and managing video frequencies we will likely add pre-sorting. Midway through qualifying rounds racers are sorted according to their results thus far in the day. This regroups the racers to run with others that are having similar performance that day, and makes for even closer competition. It also gives a taste of what to expect when the mains are run.
